My competition entry for the "night and day" competition over at http://www.experimentalgameplay.com is finished.

The URL for the applet is here:
http://www.rightanglegames.com/starcleaner/index.html

Feedback is highly appreciated!

According to the rules the game was done in 7 days or less.
Overall I spent 5 evenings on the game and one "day" was split over 4 evenings where I spent a max of an hour each on the game - so I counted this as one day
So that makes 6 days/evenings for this little game.

The game uses a modified version of Kevin's lighting code, some stuff from Marte's engine, extended to a nice entity library. The platform code is mainly based on stuff from Noel Berry who created the "Advanced Platform Engine" for Flashpunk in ActionScript 3.

I plan to release the source code in the next days.

Have fun,
Tommy

Pretty neat. It's done well.

In terms of game play, there is a lot of "dead time" were the player is doing nothing but waiting for night. Maybe add some objective to day time so the player has something to do besides wait.

looks nice

I've found some bugs:
1) I think if you jump up from the highest platform on level1 it will kill you, something kept killing me when I jumped towards the sun/moon

2) in level 2 you can jump from the pit.. when you start falling into the pit just press up and character will jump when it reaches bottom of the screen

overall, I've found collecting invisible things kind of irritating, as you must wait for the night to come, especially if your only reward when collecting is a sound.
sound of jumping also could be less laser like as you jump all the time and it gets boring/annoying fast
I like the intro screen and graphics for the main character, looks cool like child graphics for a game where you are angel collecting stars.. really hit the theme

Thanks for already playing it and thanks for the feedback, guys!

@dime: Even while you can't see the stars during the daytime you can still collect them. But I agree - duration of the daytime needs twisting...

@Kova: You are not allowed to leave the screen at all so you have to be careful where you jump
Jumping out of a pit seems to be a bug - although wall jumping is in so it might be okay. BTW, wall jumping was added to the original APE engine for Flashpunk by Gornova!

The sounds could be much better, I agree. I will look for better ones and replace them. But given the 7 days overall time I was just twisting some tunes using SFXR...
Thanks that you liked the graphics style - me too

Hmm.... Well done. I like it.

A few things to possibly fix however:

1)The Lights of the stars disappears already when going from night to day, the stars themselves you can see, but their lights are off.

2)Why not dim the light/darkness in one flow? Now you have like, four 'degrees' of darkness, but you could simply subtract some from the light every frame until you have night, and then add the same number every frame again to regain light. This would make it seem more natural.

3)It would awesome to see the light of the stars earlier in the evening. It is quite strange now that you only see the light in the darkest of the night. That is not right.(wow, a poem xD)

4)The Moving Platforms seemed to move much slower while reading the sign.

5)I know you can airjump, but you can jump even another time when you've fallen a bit down, but are still in the air.

6)Mozilla had difficulties displaying the Applet correctly without F11(fullscreen page mode) on. I missed some bit of the bottom. I don't know if this is a error from you however :P.

Hi RedJiggly, I agree with all of your points 1 to 3.

4) I haven't experienced that but will check it.
5) Kova mentioned that too and I could reproduce it. I will look into it.
6) Runs just great on my Firefox

Thanks for the feedback - I'll tell you when a new version is up!

oh. Maybe it should start at night, then go to day quickly. The player could then try and remember were the stars are and chase after then in the day time.

Hi all, I uploaded a new version of Star Cleaner (same link as above):
http://www.rightanglegames.com/starcleaner/index.html

What's different?

- Fixed a frame rate issue with the game (yes, I should know, the main method is not called for applets. Sigh.).
- The dim effect from day to night and night to day is much smoother now.
- You can also see the light of the stars while the day/night transition happens. Looks great.
- Double jump only works if you jumped before and not if you simply fall down from a platform.
- If you skip a level by pressing 'N' your score is reset to zero because you are a cheater who just wants to look at all the levels

What didn't change yet?

- Still no background music.
- Still those annoying beeps and blips for the sound effects. I cannot use some sounds that I bought years ago because I can't distribute them with the Marte Engine due to copyright issues of course. Any free(!) recommendations where the license of the sounds allows distribution in some open source project?

Have a nice play and give some feeback if you want!

Cheers,
Tommy
