 Post subject: startup time

hi, i am making a bomberman game clone using slick2D and marte engine. My problem is the game starts slowly, i use sprite sheets instead of individual images, how can i make my game open faster, i am waiting for your suggestions thanks in advance.

One thing that made my game take a long time to load is a large music file. Make sure to stream your music files instead of loading it entirely to memory. If that's not the case, perhaps it's the amount of sprite sheets you're loading at startup. Do you have a lot of different graphics? Try loading your graphics at different stages depending on what you're going to use for that stage, etc.

Are you loading UnicodeFonts at startup?
Are you creating a lot of FBO textures with getGraphics? Find out how many textures you've got going with the dev branch method InternalTextureLoader.getTextureCount().

Also think about loading resources only as necessary. i.e. Don't load resources for level 10 until the user reaches that point.

I've got the same problem.

1. Use Music class for music files or any large sound files. This will stream the files instead of load them all into memory at once. This means that it will only start loading when you start playing it, and it will only load small chunks of the file at a time (i.e. Music won't impact start-up time). Note that you can only play one Music instance at a time, and it only works with OGG files.
2. What files are causing those exceptions? Can you upload them?
3. Try putting all of your sprites into a large texture atlas (i.e. 512x512).
4. Use a loading screen to improve user experience. Or break up loading, i.e. load all the main menu sprites/sounds first, then when the user clicks "New game" load the game sounds and sprites.
