Astroiz

In one sentence
Rocks in space.

Abstract
„Astroiz“ is a classic arcade shooting game. The player scores points by shooting Asteroids. An Asteroid has different states. It can split into two or more smaller pieces. The smaller the Asteroid the higher the Score.

Target Audience
Casual gamer.

Platform
Windows, OS X, Linux (Java 5, OpenGL)

----------------------------------------------------

I tested the Webstart-Version under OS X but it should work on Windows, too. Any positive feedback is very welcome.

The "game" was "hacked" together in about 4 till 5 hours. It should be an entry for GameJolt's minimal Contest, but i had no time (family, work and so on...).

To do
- some sfx
- a little soundtrack / minimal style
- more roid variations
- better respawn
- options menu
- minimalistic gui improvements
- player mapped input keys

Done
- more feedback for user (Next wave)
- Fixed a glitch in MainMenu-Screen (Key-Event was received in transition)
- Added invincibility on entering next Wave, thx to manunderground
- Added respawning message, thx to manunderground
- player / roid collision
- player explosion effect
- rpod explosion effect
- some logic for driving the gameplay
- more feedback for user (Game Over)
- highscore (online)
- minimalistic gui (options / highscore)

Screenshots / Rating / Webstart / Misc

Hey pretty cool! I actually just made a version of Asteroids myself to learn a little Silverlight so of course I totally rocked the high scores Razz

Here is some feedback:

* I really like the hand drawn artwork
* I also like that the ship flashes to indicate your are invincible at the start
* I think when you clear a level it should bestow you w/ invincibility once more in case an asteroid spawns near or on top of you
* It seemed like asteroids were temporarily invincible when spawned which didn't seem fair and got me killed
* Wasn't sure how to respawn when I died, should put some text
* Also wasn't terrible clear where the cursor was on the high score screen or why it limited the length of the field to so few characters
* The controls felt good, really nothing to fix there

I've actually made Asteroids 4 times now. It was the first game I made (used slick at the time) and I usually use it to learn new technology since it doesn't have complex physics or require lots of content.

Here are some ideas which I think make Asteroids more fun:

* Add space aliens which can fire at the player, I usually have them move horizontally and don't have them wrap
* I added a "starfall" event in my latest attempt which I thought was fun, periodically a bunch of huge stars would fall from the top left to the bottom right side of the screen and you'd have to dodge them
* Power ups like anti gravity, a shield, etc
* Resetting the player at the start of each level. I only did this in the first version (source code available FYI if you want) but I think it's better that way, makes completing a level feel more rewarding
* Particle effects for when things blow up, especially your ship. I love to watch a bunch of dust bits fly off in random directions and fade when I shoot stuff or get blown up.
* Shake the screen, for instance when you get blown up. I've found this makes dying feel much more exciting.

Anyway just a few thoughts. Looking forward to seeing more soon!

thx for your feedback Gornova. I'm working on a fix right now. The problem is, that sometimes the VSync isn't set. I tried to limit the fps to 60 but then the movement is jittery...
