I am aware of two lternatives TWL widget thing and http://www.angelcode.com/products/bmfont/ and bmfont front the screens

I can never use TWL for more than 2-3 minutes without getting tons of exception errors and it crashing and losing anything ive barely worked on, and the interface is non intuitive to me

I LOVE the UI of hiero, its Perfect. I just wish I could output usable font files. If only the output wouldn't output backward/reversed letters? Is there any way to fix it manually?

my system:
Windows 7 64 bit
Java 6, update 23 (32 bit)

Yup. Just fire up your favorite image editor tool, load the font png file and do a flip horizontal. Save the image and it should work

What do you mean with that? TWL is a UI library and has no UI on it's own.

If you mean the theme editor - then post the crash reports. And which part of the UI is non intuitive about the font generator?

My correction, I never have really got a chance to play with TWL itself as I can never get far with the theme generator. I admit the stuff ive seen made with it seems impressive and cool. I will try and post some of the crash reports.

It would be nice to see a display of the font sample text as I am changing settings, so I can help pinpoint down what exactly I am getting from changing the settings.

There is a webstart for the Theme editor:
http://twl.l33tlabs.org/themer/themer.jnlp

That should work without having to build it yourself, etc.
